Everybody should have a cleansing product and an exfoliating product in their skin care arsenal, because both of these are essential when it comes to healthy skin.
Why?
Well, a cleanser removes the dirt, oil and dead skin cells that have settled onto the surface of your skin over the course of the day. An exfoliant goes a little deeper, pulling out impurities from within the pores.
This not only helps to prevent free radicals from causing accelerated skin aging, but also allows any other skin care products you use to properly penetrate into your skin, without being blocked by anything else.
Ideally, your cleanser and exfoliant should be as high quality as possible, which is why I decided to give a few products from the Nubi skin care range a try.
There were three products in particular that intrigued me:
- Nubi Foaming Cleanser
- Nubi Facial Peeling
- Nubi Purifying Toner
Here’s what I thought of them…
Who is Nubi?
Before using the products, I thought I would find out a little more about the Nubi skin care brand…
This is a brand that tries to make use of beneficial botanicals wherever possible.
All of their products are free of parabens, which are a group of preservatives that you want nowhere near your skin.
None of their products have been tested on animals, and their packaging is recyclable, all of which are huge plus points in my eyes.
The Nubi Foaming Cleaser
A cleanser is something that should be used every day.
While some people choose to cleanse in the morning, I prefer to do this at night.
Why?
Because this means that you clear away everything that has built up on your skin throughout the day. This then enables your skin to properly heal and regenerate while you are asleep.
Opening the Box:
The Nubi Foaming Cleanser came packaged in a beautifully branded box.
The cleanser itself was in a black, opaque container with a pump dispenser, which couldn’t be more perfect. The fact that the packaging blocks light, as well as air, from entering into the product will go a long way in prolonging the cleanser’s shelf life.
Examining the Ingredients:
I am always very careful about what I put onto my skin, which is why I can never use a new skin care product without first checking out the ingredients list.
So, what’s in the Nubi Foaming Cleanser?
An interesting mix of ingredients, including:
- Sodium Lauroamphoacetate – this is a cleansing agent derived from coconuts, and is known to be extremely mild and gentle on the skin
- Decyl Glucoside – another cleansing and foaming agent that comes from coconuts and corn
- Salt – gives the pores an even deeper clean, while helping to re-balance the skin’s oil production and therefore preventing breakouts
- Orange Peel Oil – an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic ingredient that also provides the skin with anti-aging benefits
From the ingredients list, it would seem as though this cleanser is quite a gentle one, making it suitable for all skin types.
Using the Cleanser:
The instructions on the box state to apply a liberal amount of the cleanser onto wet skin, so this is exactly what I did.
The consistency of the cleanser was gorgeous – it was lightweight but creamy at the same time.
I applied this to my skin and massaged it in thoroughly, so that the lather could form. The lather wasn’t quite as thick as I was expecting, but this was actually a bonus for me.
Why?
Because while a thick and bubbly lather may seem more effective, the ingredients used to create this foam usually end up having quite a drying effect on the skin.
After lathering up, I rinsed the cleanser off with warm water.
The Verdict:
So, what did I think of the Nubi Foaming Cleanser?
I definitely enjoyed using it. I don’t normally use foaming cleansers, as the majority of them are too harsh on my skin, so I am excited to have finally found a gentle, skin-soothing version.
I will likely use this cleanser a few times a week, alternating it with the micellar water that I normally use to cleanse.
The Nubi Facial Peeling
The Nubi Facial Peeling is an advanced exfoliating product.
What does it do?
It basically “peels” away any dead skin cells and other impurities from your skin, not only from the surface but also from deeper within the pores.
Opening the Box:
Just like the other Nubi skin care products, the Nubi Facial Peeling comes in a quality branded box.
Within the box is a black opaque jar containing the product.
I was expecting to see the product as soon as I unscrewed the lid, but there were a couple more layers to get through first…
The jar featured a plastic covering with a pull-tab, as well as a layer of foil beneath that sealed the product in. I don’t usually like products with excessive packaging, but this is something that I do appreciate when it comes to skin care.
The only downside to the packaging was that removing all of the foil was near-impossible. However, since the foil around the outside edge of the jar wasn’t coming into contact with the actual product, this doesn’t really cause a problem.
Examining the Ingredients:
Here’s what I discovered after doing a little digging into the ingredients within the Nubi Facial Peeling:
- Hydroxyacetophenone – although I had never heard of this ingredient before, my research showed that this compound, which is found in various herbs and plants, is not only an effective preservative that extends the shelf life of a product, but also provides antioxidant and skin-calming benefits
- Nut Shell Powder – this is usually derived from walnuts, after they have been ground down into tiny particles. These particles then work as a scrub when applied to the skin, dislodging any dirt, dead skin cells and other impurities
- Sea Salt – a fantastic cleanser that will re-balance the amount of sebum your skin produces while preventing the growth of bacteria. The salt particles themselves also have an exfoliating effect on the skin
When I first looked at the product, I thought that it would be a chemical exfoliant. However, after taking a look through the ingredients list, it would seem as though this product is more of a physical exfoliant.
This means that it makes use of abrasive particles, rather than chemicals, to exfoliate the skin.
Physical exfoliants are what I usually use, so I was looking forward to giving this one a try…
Using the Product:
I was very surprised by the texture and consistency of the Nubi Facial Peeling – but in a good way!
It was transparent, with tiny gold-like flecks, and had a gel-like texture to it. It looked and felt wonderfully luxurious, and I couldn’t wait to try it on my face.
The instructions stated to apply the product to clean and dry skin, so, after rinsing the cleanser off, I patted my skin dry and applied the Facial Peeling.
It had an immediate cooling and soothing effect on my skin which I loved. This continued on as I massaged the product into my skin for half a minute.
I was a little apprehensive about how abrasive this exfoliant would be…
Some brands use larger-sized nut shell particles, and these can end up causing micro-tears in the skin. If you often use physical exfoliants, you have probably come across scrubs in the past that seem just a little too sharp!
However, the abrasive particles in the Nubi Facial Peeling actually felt quite soft. There was definitely nothing sharp about them, even when I increased the pressure as I was massaging it in.
I then used warm water to rinse it off.
The Verdict:
My skin looked noticeably brighter and fresher after I had rinsed the Facial Peeling off. It also felt softer and smoother, so I can say with certainty that the product does work.
How does it compare to other exfoliating products?
I’d say that it ranks at the top of the list. I loved that it was so gentle on my skin, but still brought about fantastic results.
The product is designed to be used once or twice a week. Although my skin type is dry, and can sometimes be sensitive, the Nubi Facial Peeling feels mild enough for me to safely use twice a week, so I will be replacing my usual exfoliating products with this one for now.
The Nubi Purifying Toner
While some people use a toner every day, and others don’t use one at all, I use one a few times a week.
Wondering what a toner actually does?
It has a couple of different functions:
- Clearing away any impurities or product residue that has been left behind by a cleanser or exfoliant
- Re-balancing the skin’s pH level, which can often be disrupted by cleansing agents
Usually, a toner should be used after cleansing, before you apply any serums or moisturizers.
However, since I was using the Facial Peeling too, I decided to save the toner for after this.
Opening the Box:
Just like the other Nubi products, the toner was packaged in an opaque, black container. It had a pump dispenser to it, limiting air from entering the product and degrading its ingredients.
It looked similar to the packaging for the cleanser, but was a slightly different shape.
Examining the Ingredients:
A quality toner needs to contain quite a fine balance of ingredients in order to do its job properly.
The ingredients used in the Nubi Purifying Toner seemed to be exactly that:
- Niacinimide – also known as vitamin B3, niacinimide does a number of things for the skin, including reducing the appearance of large pores, evening out the skin tone, strengthening the sin, and minimizing the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles
- Hyaluronic Acid – this humectant is fantastic for hydrating the skin, and I always try to make sure that the ingredient has been used in more than one of the products in my skin care routine
- Allantoin – a gentle moisturizing ingredient that also provides anti-aging benefits
- Hydrogenated Castor Oil – one of the main benefits of this ingredient is that it inhibits the growth of bacteria, making it a great tool for preventing acne. It also contains fatty acids that help to condition and protect the skin
After giving the ingredients my seal of approval, I was ready to try the toner…
Using the Toner:
Although the instructions state to soak a cotton pad in the toner, I placed some onto my fingers first, so that I could get a good look at its consistency.
It was transparent and lightweight, similar to a serum. It was slightly thicker than some other toners that I have used, but that was something that I really liked about this one.
I then soaked a cotton pad in the product, before swiping this over my face and neck.
It immediately felt extremely refreshing and cooling, to the point where I reached for another cotton pad to apply a bit more to my face.
The Verdict:
I loved this toner, especially after knowing that it contained so many skin-nourishing ingredients.
Although I usually only use a toner a few times a week, I will be using this one on a nightly basis after cleansing. The fact that it contains some fantastic anti-aging ingredients makes it the perfect addition to my skin care routine. The toner is designed to be used up to twice a day, so I may add it into my morning routine too.
The Nubi skin care range consists of nine products in total, from cleansers and toners to body butters and creams, and even a manicure set. After using the Foaming Cleanser, the Facial Peeling and the Purifying Toner, I would 100% be interested in trying out a few other products from the Nubi collection.
